Go Retro With a Meal From an Old-Fashioned Diner in Chicago

Diners have made their way into many cities and towns around the country. Often seen as retro, diners typically retain their vintage charm with features such as stainless steel accents and Formica countertops. Today, diners have dozens of different styles, but some still have that old-fashioned appeal and “greasy spoon” style. The area around OneEleven is home to a few of these classics. Stop by an old-fashioned diner in Chicago for a blast from the past.

Palace Grill

Open since 1938, the Palace Grill is considered the oldest restaurant in the West Loop area. With Chicago memorabilia covering the walls and a true diner feel, the Palace Grill is definitely a throwback experience. The extensive menu has lots of classic diner fare. They offer traditional breakfast plates, burgers, and comfort food meals like meatloaf and macaroni and cheese.

Hollywood Grill

From the vinyl seating to the red-topped counter seats, the Hollywood Grill offers old-school diner charm in Wicker Park. Open 24 hours a day, customers can enjoy the colorful decor and friendly waitstaff. The multi-page menu reads like a book, covering all of the standards including customer favorites like the “Pancho Villa Omelette,” Southern fried chicken salad and the country-fried chicken. The dessert menu is equally enticing with a selection of pies, ice cream sundaes and of course, the classic diner milkshake.

Lou Mitchell’s

In business for over 90 years, Lou Mitchell’s is a mainstay family business known throughout Chicago. This diner makes its home in the West Loop. Customers can enjoy complimentary donut holes and Milk Duds when they walk through the door. Open for breakfast and lunch, the menu includes iconic diner food such as “Waffle and WIngs” and corned beef hash. Make sure you save room for the chocolate phosphate!
